I was also very shy and hesitant about spending so much money on knives like the other reviewer.
However, after my wife complained about how dull the Ginsu knives that I bought for her were, I decided to take the plunge in to the luxury? or professional? (lack of a better term) knives world. Wow... from usability to finish, these knives simply blew the Ginsu knives out of the water.
I tried slicing a watermelon in half with the chef's knife and it just sliced right through without much effort. The Ginsu knife had me struggling to get the knife through. I was shy about spending so much on knives. These are totally worth it!
I have never used knives so sharp; ever! The Chef's Knife has become my favorite. It has just enough rocking motion that it makes me feel like a pro (I'm not!). So far, every knife I've tried from this set can take on ripe tomatoes with ease. The Bread Knife tackles bread perfectly. The shears are awesome; they come apart for easy cleaning. I'm new to using a steel, but this addition really completes the set; I steel after every use now.
The only downside was the block had a defect; the top most slot had some wood partially blocking it. I contacted Wusthof's Support and they sent me a replacement for no charge. So -1 star for the defect, but +1 star for great service.
