I received this knife recently as a wedding gift and I have been very pleased with its performance.
Note, however, that while the edge as shipped is sharp enough to slice through onions and scallions completely, it isn't sharp enough to slice through office paper dropped from mid-air--the kind of edge that many knife enthusiasts look for--so sharpening is recommended.
The Gourmet line is the lowest end of the Wusthof line that is manufactured in Germany (the Silverpoint line is made elsewhere). While Wusthof literature says that this knife is made from the same steel as their higher-end knives, the Gourmet line is made from stamped steel as opposed to forged steel.
As for the knife itself, the blade tapers from the handle to the tip. The knife has good heft and its rivets are flush against the handle. There is no bolster or finger guard--a plus factor, in my opinion, because it makes proper sharpening of the edge easier. It also allows me to use the...Read more

This is a household favorite among a couple that enjoy cooking foods that actually require cutting. We own both Wusthof and Henkel chef's knives = both are beautifully crafted but this is the one we both go for when cooking together. Nice weight, great feel for male or female hands, keeps a great edge. Superb tool you won't regret purchasing.

I love all my Wusthof knives, but this Chef's knife is the one I go for constantly. I probably use it and my little 3-inch straight paring knife every evening when I cook. I have had mine for several months now and it is still just as sharp as ever. I was so surprised when it even sliced tomatoes beautifully, so much so that I haven't even bothered to use my old well liked serrated knife. Being a woman with smaller hands, or average for my size, I bought the 6-inch size, and it feels very comfortable in my hand. It's a perfect size for me. Perhaps a man, or someone with larger hands, would prefer this knife in one of the longer lengths. I sure can't live without it now that I have it. I use it for practically everything.
