Product Review

Victorinox, makers of the Original Swiss Army Knife, has been crafting fine cutlery since the later 1800's. The Victorinox master cutlers have applied their unique ingenuity and techniques to design the highest quality, forged cutlery line. This fine cutlery is hot-drop forged and ice tempered by master forgers in Solingen, Germany exclusively for Victorinox, then shipped to Victorinox in Switzerland for application of their famous proprietary sharp edge and rigid quality control finishing. The result is beautifully balanced, perfectly weighted full tang construction, an intuitively engineered comfortable handle, a high carbon, no stain, high polished forged steel blade with an edge that retains its razor sharpness. 8-piece Knife Block Set includes: 3.5-inch Parer for precision cutting; 6-inch Boning Knife for precise control when separating meat from the bone; 8-inch Slicer for caring neat and even slices; 8-inch Chef's Knife for practically any cutting job; 9-inch Bread Knife for cutting through hard crust or peel without squashing the tender middle inside; Sharpening Steel for keeping knives razor sharp; Kitchen Shear for opening packaging, trimming dough, snipping herbs, even opening bottles; 9-slot Hardwood Block to store and protect knives and has room to add 2 more knives to your collection.

I ordered these knives and they arrived promptly. The knives themselves are very nice, but a little heavy. The block however is a total piece of crap! It has a thin layer of lacquer that had the edges worn away where the knives are slotted, likely from shipping. The small knives fall over because the block gives no support to them. The slot is too big. I returned them and will likely get Wusthof because, after looking at them in the store, their block is solid oak. I have always liked Victorinox but please step up your game and spring for a real block when your customers drop $300+ on knives.

I've lived in Europe most of my life and I know a good knife. These are excellent quality knifes! However I was quite disappointed by the quality of the block and the cheap looking emblem on the front. Doesn't even look like the picture on Amazon... and of course it wasn't made in Europe.

Gave this as a gift to my brother in law for his engagement and he seemed to be really impressed by it and really like it.

I did a lot of comparisons when looking for a knife set to purchase at this price range. While I _personally_ would have preferred a smaller set of better knives (say Shuns), it seems that most people prefer a more complete set - go figure. That being the case, as I looked around on Amazon, I didn't find many knife sets at this price range that didn't have "gaps" between the block and the knives; most sets had a block that had empty slots. I also liked the more contemporary and modern lines of the knives.

As for the performance and ergonomics? I can't say - yet. But MOST people also aren't knife nuts like me and a set like this would perform as well or better than their daily use, stamped steel knives. The important thing is that your average 20-something venturing out on their own will really love this knife set for their home or...Read more
