The new knives are exactly the same. They work great but the buyer must know that they are the type of stainless steel that will rust slightly (That's because of the metal blade alloy being stronger so as to keep a sharp edge). I keep extras around as good utility knives for cutting open food packaging, for making sandwiches and dozens of other small tasks.
Knife makers have to choose between edge-holding and rust stain resistance when choosing steels. Very expensive knives do a bit better than these at being "stainless", but they also should not be placed in a dishwasher (as Wusthof, Shun and Henckels warn). Farberware may have decided to back off on rust stain resistance in its metal choice for the sake of edge-holding, but all 12 of my steak knives are free of rust staining after five years of heavy, heavy use. I used to think the difference between my experience and others is that I hand wash my knives and PROMPTLY hand dry them, returning them to storage.
