A superb set of stunningly sharp and handsome knives, these blades are built on balance, accuracy and control: crafted of the finest high-carbon stainless steel and precision tapered to an extremely sharp edge. This 17 piece Triple Riveted set in a cherry wood block includes one 8" chef knife, one 8" bread knife, one 8" slicing knife, one 7" Santoku knife, one 5.5" serrated utility knife, one 3.5" Santoku/paring knife, eight stamped steak knives, one sharpener and one pair of shears. Each knife features a forged triple riveted handle with an ergonomically comfortable grip and a high carbon stainless steel blade with a Rockwell hardness of 48-52 for a sharp edge. The cherry wood finished block has three extra slots allowing you to customize your set.

I bought this set just about a year ago. I've always had very good experience with Cuisinart items. Heck, I'm still using my father's Cuisinart food processor that he bought sometime in the early 1980s. It works perfectly (as long as I don't misplace any parts). So when we needed a new knife set - especially new steak knives - I thought this would be a great deal. Good price, Cuisinart quality and reputation. Can't miss, right?

Wrong.

1. The knives are just not sharp. Out of the box, I couldn't get them to cut properly. The large and small Santuko knives are the only ones that cut halfway decently. My set did not include the small parer (see #4 below) but a smaller Santuko knife instead.

2. The large serrated knife can't cut a loaf of bread, let alone anything more dense. I've tried sharpening them and it helps, somewhat. But I am still very disappointed.
